Frightened Hare

from Night by Marc Wolfson Pinansky

/

lyrics

We are the company we keep
We are the attention we seek
We are the choices that we make
We are the bonds that we will break

We have no electricity
We are so less human than we seem
The future’s falling down like frogs
And all these texts we claim to read
Ancient scrolls to lull to sleep
They’re only good when people die horribly
And they often do

I tell you now because you’re not my friend
I see a way and it’s your end
I wish for you only the truly worst
But more so, I wish your eyes reversed

For I would rather go out last
Chained upon your sinking mast
With a heart and mind of unshakable love
For I am right and you are wrong
But you have known this all along
But to admit would be just too much to bear
For a frightened hare

I see the skull beneath your eyes
That holds the secrets locked inside
An Uncle’s hand, just a doctor inspecting things…
Or that one time late after school
Wet leaves and jeans, it’s all a blur
A best friend who would never speak of this again
Though it happened again

Or perhaps your struggle was never real
And to confront another just reveals
An unescapable ache of undeservedness
Your fears have all been handed down
That you are with and others without
And it leaves you with a seemingly unbridgeable divide
In the skull behind your eyes
