about

I was able to secure the rights to the theme song for failed late 70's TV pilot, "Me & The Mazz." Bootlegs of the song made from a transistor radio have circled around for years, but no one has been able to track down and secure the rights to the masters - until now!

Clearly an attempt to cash in on the success of shows like The Dukes of Hazzard and B.J. and the Bear, Me & The Mazz failed to get picked up by CBS in the fall of 1980. While collectors have yet to track down the pilot episode, the theme song, logo (from a few promo T-shirts) and pitch paragraph (thank you TV Guide) seem to be the only pieces to have survived:

"Follow the weekly exploits of Davie Derringer and his lovable, loose-cannon, trouble-loving friend, simply known as The Mazz. Come to think of it, few people really know what his real name is! In their beat-up Cadillac, along with the gorgeous and tough Polly Jean, these three find all sorts of trouble - or does trouble find them?!"

Little details remain about the song, other than that it was recorded at Nashville's RCA Victor studio and credited to second-rate Bakersfield singer Sterling Spivey (with his obvious Waylon Jennings leanings, again, thanks to Dukes of Hazzard popularity). Rumors have circled for years as to the musicians on the track, most popular being Sneaky Pete Kleinow on steel and James Burton on guitar, though never confirmed. Some music historians place both Lloyd Green, Buddy Emmons and young prodigy Mike Castellana in Nashville at this time for the recording of their landmark "American Steel" album, leading to the current conclusion that the track features the young Castellana on both electric and steel. This theory is further supported by the stylistic similarities to Castellana's playing and tone and the fact that they could save money hiring him rather than bigger names like Emmons, Green or Burton.

The logo was created by Andy "Gus" Guthrie. Known for countless famous logos throughout the 1970's and 80's, Guthrie is perhaps best remembered for updating the Tab soda logo to what we know today, and the graphics for the popular early 70's crime drama "McTavish."
